PopCap Games are a world leader in casual video games for many platforms and recently they announced that they are planning to launch Zuma’s Revenge! for Xbox LIVE.

Funnily enough I have been playing quite a bit of this game on my PC recently and it’s fun and fabulous. It is a blockbuster Action Puzzler that I enjoy playing to wind down.

Zuma’s Revenge! for Xbox LIVE will include exclusive new game modes Boss Rush and Weekly Challenge. There will also be an all-new player progression system via Spirit Animal companions.

The information I received came from Dublin and is advertising a summer release, which means for those of us in the southern hemisphere it’s going to be a winter release, of Zuma’s Revenge! as an Arcade product for 800 Microsoft Points. The digital game will have a global release in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Brazilian Portugese.

Peggle

This PopCap game has got me hooked. It is like a retro combination of a pinball game and Breakout and it has got me chained to the mouse. I go in to play a level or two to get a feel, get some inspiration for what to write and next thing you know the clock has jumped forward.

If I had to list the number of ways this game grabbed me it would be quite a long list but it all started with the cartoon unicorn that greeted me on opening the game. Anyone that knows me knows the game had me at the unicorn.

Peggle is set up almost like a pinball machine with your chute of balls down the left hand side, they shoot out at the top centre of screen and you need to direct their bounce to hit as many of the pegs distributed across the gameboard as possible.

The blue pegs are there to help make the pattern.
The orange pegs are the ones you need to clear to successfully pass the level.
The green pegs (there are 2 per level) give you a special power that coincides with the cartoon Peggle master controlling the launcher.
The purple pegs multiply your score.

peggle

Each level provides you with a set number of balls which can be increased if you catch the ball in the bucket before it falls off screen or if you achieve a high score with an individual ball.

The adventure mode is made up of 55 levels that become increasingly challenging, every 5th level or so you unlock a new Peggle master who will oversee your game and bring a special power to help you through, they will also often impart a piece of wisdom before the level begins.

If Adventure mode doesn’t do it for you then there’s Quick Play which will let you jump to any level that you have previously unlocked. If you can’t decide what you want to play there is a random option that will throw up levels you have unlocked in any order, and you can play as any Peggle master so the power you use isn’t necessarily the one you had to unlock the level.

Duel gives you a 2 player option where you can play a friend or take on the computer, in any level you have unlocked playing Adventure mode. You also have the Random option in this mode. There are only 6 balls per player in Duel and catching your ball gives a bonus but no free ball. Both players are using the same game board so it can be quite annoying if the other player gets the good pegs.

The last mode is Challenge, this is an extra 75 Grand Master Challenges which are unlocked at the end of Adventure mode.

There is a lot to be said for the addictive nature of this game. It all comes down to the luck of the bounce really, but that doesn’t mean there’s no skill involved. If you can work out the precise angle from which to strike…

It is bright and vividly coloured which means it’s extremely eye-catching for the younger players, my Miss 8 became rather entranced with just standing watching. It really is a great game for all ages because there is nothing that could be suggestive or offensive. It’s fun and it’s a FABULOUS tool of procrastination, I’m just lucky I got to call it work. Definitely a game I put off coming to write about so that I could continue playing it.

Great for calming stress relief, I think I will come back to it for an end of evening wind down on a regular basis.

BugBits

Stunning graphics and ants aren’t a usual combination, but the new game BugBits combines the two and makes it work in a new and extraordinary way.

The game revolves around the need to gather nectar to stay alive and defend your territory during enemy battles, players dispatch ants and wriggly creatures to successfully protect their turf (or piece of dirt as the case may be).

Each level is so incredibly different, you’ll never feel the monotony that so often occurs with typical arcade games.  Levels vary between rescue, combat, defense and time tests. Each offers a new advance in the game in a new and creative way.

The game can be a little confusing until you get into it and grasp what and why you’re running around collecting golden drops and zooming in and out on pretty daisy flowers.  The help button is hidden and there are no tutorials but you do learn as you go.  The cyclic nature of the games means there are plenty of different game modes which allow you to switch it up each time you play.

BugBits also offers a two player mode, allowing you to face off against your opponent on the same computer. (One using the mouse, one using the keyboard) giving it yet another dimension of play.

But back to the graphics, apart from being smooth 3D, BugBits offers vivid, smooth imagery with gorgeous styling. I never thought those words would sit in a game review, but amongst the leafy greens, the stems of grass and fresh flowers- gorgeous is the one word that can describe this fresh new arcade game.

BugBits offers a unique cross between a strategy game and an arcade game with beautiful graphics and will be a clear winner with anyone wanting a fresh new style of game.

Heartwild Solitaire Book Two

grey dots

Heartwild Solitaire Book Two was my first trek into the Heartwild Solitaire world. Combining a love story with solitaire is a new concept for me and adds an extra dimension to an otherwise addictive game of cards. Romance is the last thing I expect to find in a game of solitaire, but somehow Heartwild Solitaire manages to mix the two with a unique and challenging storyline.

Binky’s quiet life of being a maid by day and a muse to her lover at night  (the artist) has captured her heart. But in this edition of the game, wandering eye leads him to distraction with a new beauty and as the player, we create the story, challenging with the cards to decide the next path.

With 280 levels, the game is sure to keep you captivated as you navigate the treacherous journey of Binky’s love life.

Each round has a new title and leads you through a different game of solitaire – with feminine designs and pretty colours the levels are played out amongst embroidered cushions and powdered brushes.

The game comes with four possible endings- depending on which path you choose. It’s challenge until you learn the rules of this unique version of solitaire and notice the sometimes hidden piles of cards. Bonus levels provide extra interest and break up the seemingly endless levels.

Will Binky win her man or will the cards lead her to a different story?

Super Granny 5

grey dots

When most people think of Grannys they think of little old ladies enjoying their retirement by passing the time knitting, playing cards, bingo or even lawn bowls. Super Granny is quite the opposite as she spends her time battling evil forces and saving her mass of kittens which always seem to go missing.

Super Granny’s latest adventure begins when evil cat Dr. Meow, who’s been using Granny’s basement to create science experiments, decided he wants the house all to himself. In order to achieve this he blasts Granny and her companions with his energy beam which shrinks them down to the size of ants.

supergranny 5

In order to restore Granny and her beloved kittens, you must navigate through the backyard collecting her feline friends. Sounds easy enough, but your enemies are the backyard creepy crawlies which include centipedes, slugs and bees.

There are only a few defences available such as digging pits, a handbag which shoots fruit, blowtorches and baseball bats but they only ward off attackers for a few seconds which can prove annoying. The down side of Granny getting attacked and having to start again is that any cats you’ve collected don’t count unless you’ve dropped them safely at a certain door, which will soon become a habit once you’ve gotten out a few times.

The 2D game play is very reminiscent to arcade games of the 90’s. All the action takes place on a single screen, lots of bonus items to collect, puzzles to solve and traps to avoid over 130 levels. To navigate you simply use the directional keys.

The exit to the next level appears only once all the kittens have been collected. You might well be tempted to leave one or two that are in tricky spots behind but granny won’t allow it.

The fifth edition of the successful franchise has an option to create and share your stages with the built-in level editor. It has a simple option that lets you select what you want to create on the stage and use the mouse to place it where you’d like on an invisible grid.

For those who can’t get enough of sharing on social networking sites there is an option to have game achievements shared online via Facebook and Twitter.

Super Granny provides light hearted entertainment, it won’t have you burning the midnight oil but is good to kill half an hour here or there.
